Report: Arsenal register interest in 'very special' Vlahovic alternative; Tottenham and Newcastle also keen
Arsenal have become the latest club to register an interest in signing French youngster Hugo Ekitike, who is currently plying his trade with Stade Reims over in Ligue 1.
Ekitike, 19, has been strongly linked with Newcastle in the last week. Reports have suggested the teenager is high on Eddie Howe’s shopping list. The Magpies manager is apparently keen to see Ekitike be the next big signing to arrive at St James’ Park.
Tottenham are also said to be interested in Ekitike. However, it is a report from The Chronicle today which has listed Arsenal as one of the interested parties as well. The striker is said to be valued at around the £25m mark and for the Gunners, could represent a cheaper alternative to Dusan Vlahovic.
Reports from Italy this morning had claimed Arsenal had lodged a bid in the region of £60m for Vlahovic. The Serbian has emerged as the number one attacking target for the Gunners. However, there is quite the scramble for Vlahovic and Ekitike could be a cheaper option.
Newcastle, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Watford today as Chris Wood got a debut. It’s a result which could prompt PIF into more action this week. Ekitike, then, might well end up in the northeast before Arsenal even get going.
TBR’s View: Arsenal And Ekitike Links Unsurprising Given History
Ever since the Wenger days, Arsenal have had firm eyes on the French market so it is no surprise to see the Gunners being keen on Ekitike here.
He does have the profile of an Arsenal player, too. He’s young, quick, full of potential and has an air of Thierry Henry about him when he glides along the pitch. However, with Newcastle’s spending power and Arsenal so focussed on Vlahovic, this would be a surprise move.
Regardless, it looks like the Premier League will at least get to feast their eyes on Ekitike soon enough. Labelled ‘very special’ by Oscar Garcia, he’s certainly a talent to be excited about.
