Report: Eddie Howe has now told PIF he wants ‘amazing’ player to be the next striker they sign for Newcastle

Newcastle United could be about to step up their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike this month, with Eddie Howe apparently telling PIF the striker is his number one choice as next signing.

Ekitike, 19, is a wanted man this winter. Reports have linked the youngster with a move to both Newcastle and Tottenham. However, it is the Magpies who are most heavily-linked, with Eddie Howe determined to sign another striker to go alongside Chris Wood. Indeed, 90Min report that Ekitike is now Howe’s number one choice to be the club’s next signing.

But according to 90Min, Newcastle might not have a clear run at Ekitike. That’s because PSG have now apparently made contact with the young Frenchman. it’s claimed PSG see Ekitike as the long-term replacement for current striker Kylian Mbappe, who himself could move in the summer.

So far, Newcastle have been reluctant to meet a reported £25m+ demand from Reims for Ekitike. However, PSG’s interest could well PIF’s hand now. If they really do want the teenager, then they might simply have to put up the cash, especially given Howe’s apparent preference to sign Ekitike.

What On Earth Is Going On At Málaga?

Ekitike has hit eight goals in 19 this season. Capable from both the left-hand side and through the middle, the talented Frenchman is one of a number of exciting youngsters to emerge in Ligue 1 in recent seasons.

TBR’s View: PSG Test Is A Chance For PIF To Prove Themselves

While you can’t grumble at PIF if you’re a Newcastle fan, this is a real test. If Newcastle can beat off PSG to a major signing then it will be a real statement of intent.

Ekitike is clearly a huge talent. Whether or not he’s got enough right not to save Newcastle remains to be seen. But in terms of raw talent, he has it all. That’s also the the opinion of Julien Laurens, who deemed Ekitike an ‘amazing talent’.

£25-30m might do the trick here. It all just depends on how serious the Magpies and PIF are about fending off the very real threat of relegation.
