Antonio Conte says Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale was 'the best player on the pitch' in NLD
Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was handed the Man of the Match award in the North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, and he has earned praise from many – including Spurs boss Antonio Conte.
The 24-year-old Englishman’s performances this season have gone under the radar because almost all of the Gunners’ outfield players have played out of their skin.
However, Ramsdale showed his class on Sunday with what was arguably his best performance in an Arsenal shirt.
Antonio Conte says Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale was ‘the best player on the pitch’ in NLD
Everyone’s been raving about Ramsdale since the North London Derby on Sunday.
The Englishman made seven saves in total. xG metrics show that an average goalkeeper would’ve let in at least two goals from those shots, but the Arsenal man kept a clean sheet and was deservedly given the Man of the Match award.
Conte hailed Ramsdale as ‘fantastic’ immediately after the game on Sunday, while the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Gary Neville and Clinton Morrison have all raved about him as well.
The Tottenham boss faced the media yesterday ahead of his side’s game against Manchester City. He would’ve rewatched the derby, and while answering a question about Spurs, he once again hailed Ramsdale’s display, branding him as the ‘best player on the pitch’ on Sunday.
He said, as per Football London: “What I can say is that usually when you lose the game, it means the opponent showed to be stronger than you.
“And then it can happen in the game like against Arsenal that their goalkeeper (Ramsdale) was the best player on the pitch and we lost.
“In my opinion the performance was good and in the game against Crystal Palace we won the game and the performance good. But you know that when there is a loss it’s difficult, I don’t like to justify, because you lost the game.”
Conte’s praise for Ramsdale is completely justified, but it must make him wonder if his own goalkeeper is on the same level as the Arsenal man.
The answer, based on what happened on Sunday, is a big no, and Tottenham simply have to bring in an upgrade on Lloris if they want to reach the next level.
Arsenal, on the other hand, need depth in their squad as well, but goalkeeper is one area where they have absolutely nothing to worry about. Ramsdale is one of the best in the league, while Matt Turner has impressed for club and country as well.
The Gunners take on Manchester United next, and that will be a really difficult game. However, if Ramsdale performs as well as he did against Spurs, Arsenal should be able to pick up another win quite comfortably.
