Neville amazed by Aaron Ramsdale in Arsenal's North London derby win

Gary Neville has told The Gary Neville Podcast that he was not sure about Aaron Ramsdale when he made the move to Arsenal, but claimed that his North London derby display was the most composed he has seen from the goalkeeper.

The Gunners have moved a step closer to a surprise Premier League title win. And they did it at the home of their biggest rivals. A Hugo Lloris own goal and a Martin Odegaard strike saw Arsenal beat Spurs 2-0.

Mikel Arteta’s men were outstanding in the first-half. And they managed to see out the game after the break despite Tottenham putting more pressure on.

Neville suggests he had doubts about Ramsdale

When the home side did get through, Ramsdale was often there to make sure that Arsenal kept their first North London derby clean sheet under Arteta.

The 24-year-old made seven saves, including a couple of really impressive stops. And Neville suggested that Ramsdale has completely proved him wrong, given that he really had his doubts when the England international first ended up at the Emirates.

“I’ll be really honest with you, when I looked at Ramsdale, the price-tag, getting rid of Martinez, I wasn’t sure,” he told The Gary Neville Podcast. “He’s not my style of goalkeeper, I’ll be really honest with you. He wants to get too involved. I like a big goalkeeper, 6’3, 6’4, really dominant, scares opposition forwards. But he is more of a modern goalkeeper that is in fashion. And I have to say today, that’s the most composed I’ve seen him.

“I don’t think he put a foot wrong today. And he brought real authority to his team.”

It is almost easy to forget now, but Ramsdale did arrive as an understudy. And he was providing cover for Bernd Leno, who has been excellent throughout his Premier League career.

It did appear that the plan was always for Ramsdale to take the gloves at some stage. But few could have seen just how quickly he would take over from the German.

He spent the large majority of his first season at the Emirates as first-choice. And he has just kicked on since then – much like many of his teammates in North London.

Ramsdale had a real point to prove upon his arrival. He had been relegated in the previous two years with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Few could have foreseen that within a couple of years, he would be one of the first names on the team sheet for a team fighting for the Premier League title.
