Antonio Conte reacts to Aaron Ramsdale display in Arsenal win

Antonio Conte has praised Aaron Ramsdale after Tottenham Hotspur were beaten by Arsenal in the North London derby, with the Spurs boss telling Sky Sports (broadcast on 15/1; 19:18) that he made some fantastic saves for the visitors.

The Gunners have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points. An own goal from Hugo Lloris and a strike from Martin Odegaard saw the damage done during the first-half.

Arsenal largely blew Tottenham away before the break. And the two goals certainly knocked the wind out of the home side’s sails. But Mikel Arteta’s men were also grateful to their goalkeeper for ensuring that Spurs were unable to set up a grandstand finish.

Ramsdale made seven saves, including some big stops from both Son Heung-min and Harry Kane. That prompted Gary Neville to name the England international as his man of the match in the latter stages of the North London derby.

And Conte also suggested that he was impressed by the 24-year-old, hinting that he made a big difference to how the game played out.

“It was difficult to come back after you conceded two goals. When we conceded the first goal, we had the possibility to level the game with Sonny. And I think the keeper made a fantastic save. And then they scored the second goal,” he told Sky Sports.

“We tried, we tried with a big effort to score, to give Arsenal problems. I think the keeper made fantastic saves today. Arsenal is a difficult opponent.”

It may surprise many to know that Tottenham actually had more attempts on goal than Arsenal, with seven strike on target during the game.

The Gunners were able to be a bit more defensive having given themselves a commanding lead before the break. And Arsenal did have chances to completely kill the game off after the interval.

Ramsdale will probably argue that he did not need to make a particularly spectacular save along the way.

But Conte may be clinging to how busy he was as a small positive on what was a really disappointing day for Tottenham.
