£5.7m Arsenal man could now use Dubai training camp to break into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up – opinion

After a superb start to the season, Arsenal have returned to training to try and continue their fantastic form.

The squad are currently in Dubai, with more and more of their World Cup stars joining up with the group.

The tour started positively, with a 3-0 win over Lyon in the Dubai Super Cup.

Gabriel Magalhaes, Eddie Nketiah and Fabio Vieira all scored in the first-half.

Despite the score line, they still took part in a penalty shootout, where Karl Hein starred by making four saves.

Mikel Arteta’s side face AC Milan on Tuesday before returning to London.

His team against the Italian champions might resemble something closer to their starting line-up when they take on West Ham on Boxing Day.

Thomas Partey is back with the squad, as is Ben White, and they could both potentially feature.

Despite Hein’s heroics in goal, American ‘keeper Matt Turner could feature after returning from the World Cup.

The 28-year-old helped the USA reach the knockout stages in Qatar, and kept a clean sheet against England.

Turner has now joined up with the Arsenal first-team again, and could use his time in Dubai to convince Arteta to promote him above Aaron Ramsdale.

After England’s defeat to France last night, Bukayo Saka and Ramsdale will be heading home.

However, it’s currently unclear when they’ll join up with the rest of the squad again.

This gives Turner time to be the senior goalkeeper in the squad, and try to win over Arteta.

He impressed his Arsenal teammates with his display against Wales, and Yunus Musah was a fan too.

There was little he could do to prevent his side losing to the Netherlands in the last-16, but certainly enhanced his reputation.

Bruce Arena, via MLS Soccer, has said that Turner needs to leave Arsenal in order to play first-team football.

However, with Ramsdale having sat on the bench for the last month, he may have lost some match sharpness in that time.

The £5.7m goalkeeper proved he was capable of playing at the highest level against elite opposition.

Arteta has been reluctant to rotate his outfield players in the Premier League this season unless he has absolutely no choice.

This makes Turner’s chances of breaking into the first-team slim, but he has certainly upped the pressure on Ramsdale to perform.
