USA teammates praise Arsenal star Matt Turner's display vs Wales

Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner made his World Cup debut against Wales last night, and his moment of brilliance saved the day for the USA.

The 28-year-old joined the Gunners from MLS side New England Revolution in the summer. He has only been a backup to Aaron Ramsdale in the Premier League, but three clean sheets in four Europa League games helped him secure a spot as USA’s number one for the World Cup.

Last night, he proved his doubters wrong!

USA teammates praise Arsenal star Matt Turner’s display vs Wales

The USMNT came into the World Cup high on confidence, and their first-half display showed that.

The Americans completely dominated Wales in the opening 45 minutes. Rob Page’s side had no answer, and they were arguably lucky to go into the break only one goal down.

In the second half, however, Wales came out firing. They looked like a completely different side to the one that we all saw before the break, and the USA were under serious pressure.

Tottenham star Ben Davies had a golden opportunity to level the game in the second half and his header looked destined to find the back of the net.

However, Turner stepped up after having to do almost nothing until that point, and he pulled off a truly magnificent save to keep his side a goal up.

Gareth Bale’s penalty, in the end, gave both countries a point each, but if Turner hadn’t stopped Davies’ header, the USA would’ve suffered defeat in their opening game.

The Arsenal man’s save earned huge plaudits from his international teammates on Instagram.

Goalscorer Timothy Weah called him ‘The Best,’ while American defender Sam Vines wrote: “Unreal brous.”

TBR View:

Turner deserves immense praise for his performance in Qatar last night.

It’s never easy for any player to step up at a World Cup, but for Turner to do it on his debut in the competition at a period of the game where his side was under a lot of pressure is just brilliant.

USA will be disappointed to have not won the game after the dominance in the first half, but they’ll be incredibly grateful to the Arsenal man as without his save, they could’ve lost that game.

The Americans take on England next in what will be a really interesting game. Turner, after his performance last night, is almost guaranteed to start.
