‘You should not’: Pundit left very annoyed after what Tottenham boss Antonio Conte did on Saturday

Tottenham Hotspur produced a fantastic comeback on Saturday to come away from Bournemouth with a 3-2 win.

Goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Ben Davies and Rodrigo Bentancur meant the three points headed back to north London.

Speaking to Optus Sport, Jermaine Beckford spoke about Tottenham’s performance on Saturday.

Beckford was annoyed with the line-up Conte selected, accusing his team selection of being too defensive.

Conte once again went with three players in midfield sitting behind Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

His initial tactics weren’t working though, and Spurs went into the half-time break 1-0 down.

Conte brought Lucas Moura on at half-time for Oliver Skipp but Tottenham quickly conceded again.

The Italian manager admitted he could rest certain players ahead of their Champions League match against Marseille.

However, he was forced to bring on several key players to turn the game around, which thankfully paid off in the end.

Conte’s team was too defensive – Beckford

Speaking to Optus Sport, Beckford was unimpressed with Tottenham’s starting XI on Saturday.

“What was frustrating for me was that they started the game with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son up front – two creative players and players that are a natural goal threat – but then the other eight players, the midfielders and the defenders, were all defensive-minded players,” Beckford said.

“There was nobody with any real creativity about them, nobody who would have a defence-splitting pass or run through the lines or anything like that.

“How are you expected to win a game if you set up extremely defensive?

“You look at the players that Spurs have at their disposal – you should not be playing that defensively against Bournemouth.

“These are games that you should expect to win.”

Conte with one eye on Marseille

Conte was missing two of his key attackers in Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison.

Kulusevski was seen warming up with the side before the game, which is encouraging ahead of the World Cup break.

In order to change the game Conte even brought on Bryan Gil.

The Spaniard has been ignored for much of the season, although Conte’s convinced he’s a top talent for the future.

Spurs haven’t looked good this season when Conte has selected a team that’s too defensive, and Saturday was another example.

They were lucky only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United using the same tactic.

Brazilian winger Lucas Moura has only recently returning from an injury lay off and is currently Conte’s most senior attacking option.

Conte may have been saving his legs for tomorrow’s important Champions League encounter.

It may explain why Spurs were set up so defensively on Saturday, but will have still left plenty of fans frustrated by their performance.
