Why Real Madrid could be about to thwart Liverpool’s hopes of signing Marc Guehi

Liverpool have enjoyed a superb summer on the transfer front and it doesn’t look as though Richard Hughes is done yet.

Liverpool have already signed Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi, who has been tipped for stardom.

Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz is on his way to Anfield and Milos Kerkez is likely to follow.

In addition, Liverpool offloaded Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, who paid around £10million to sign him a month before his contract ran out.

Now, Liverpool are looking to sign some defensive reinforcements amid Jarell Quansah’s talks over a potential move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Marc Guehi is firmly in Liverpool’s sights – but Real Madrid could now indirectly thwart the Reds’ hopes of signing the Crystal Palace star.

Crystal Palace could keep hold of Marc Guehi if Ousmane Diomande goes to Real Madrid instead

Palace are reported to be in talks over signing Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP, which could pave the way for Guehi to leave this summer.

However, it has now been reported that Real Madrid have joined the race to sign Diomande, according to TEAMtalk.

Los Blancos have reportedly been keeping close tabs on the 21-year-old, who is also on the radar of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle.

Xabi Alonso is said to be a keen admirer of Diomande’s defensive strength and ability to read the game as the club looks to future-proof their defence.

If Real snap Diomande up ahead of Palace, the Eagles will need to turn their attentions elsewhere, which means Guehi’s departure would have to be put on ice.

And there’s always the risk that the Eagles decide to keep hold of Guehi until the end of next season, after which he becomes a free agent.

At that point, the race for his services will become even more intense and highly-contested, which obviously isn’t good news for Liverpool.

Whilst speaking about prior links with Tottenham, Tim Sherwood previously said Guehi is “one of the best centre-backs they can get”.

This is the case with pretty much every top team – so Liverpool will hope they can strike a deal soon, but for that, the right dominoes need to fall.

The versatile defensive alternative Liverpool are looking at this summer

Another player Liverpool are looking at this summer is Jorrel Hato, the 19-year-old Dutch star playing for Ajax.

What makes Hato especially appealing to Liverpool is the fact he can play both at centre-back and at left-back.

Liverpool are closing in on Kerkez, but there’s always the possibility both Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas could leave this summer.

“Hato is someone they’ve done a lot of work on,” TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey recently said.

“So I wouldn’t necessarily rule Liverpool completely out there – obviously he can play centrally too.”

Hato is reported to have a £40million price tag, making him a relatively inexpensive option for Liverpool considering his talent, versatility, and age.
