Liverpool remain locked in talks to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad as Arne Slot looks to add a number six to his ranks.
The Reds are looking to complete their first signing under their new manager and have been handed a boost, with Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg confirming that Zubimendi wants to join Liverpool with ‘immediate effect’ this summer.
David Ornstein also believes Liverpool have an edge in the race to sign Zubimendi, with Sporting Director Richard Hughes close to the midfielder’s agent Inaki Ibanez.
Now, a report from Spain has offered Liverpool further hope of signing the midfielder, who has a £51m release clause in his contract.
Martin Zubimendi advised not to miss Liverpool opportunity
According to a local San Sebastian newspaper Noticias de Gipuzkoa, those close to Zubimendi have urged him not to ‘miss the train,’ while the player himself has made it quite clear that he wants to join Liverpool this summer.

The midfielder is part of the Real Sociedad squad that has traveled to Berlin for a pre-season friendly against Union Berlin, but the same report states that Zubimendi’s inclusion in the squad is not a significant indication that he could remain at the club.
Liverpool, for their part, are believed to be ‘waiting nervously’ for Zubimendi’s decision as Real Sociedad attempt to convince him to remain at his boyhood club for at least another season.
Liverpool well-positioned to complete Martin Zubimendi transfer
The Reds have made their play to sign their top target this summer and the elegant midfielder could be some signing. Slot believes Zubimendi would bring control to Liverpool’s midfield and views him as the ideal candidate for the number six role.
While things are moving along rather slowly at the moment, the Premier League side are in a good position to get the deal over the line.
Fabrizio Romano believes Zubimendi views Liverpool as a ‘really special’ club and is ‘tempted’ by a move to Anfield, which is another indication that the player has his heart set on a transfer.
With the new season set to commence just over a week from now, all parties involved will look to resolve the situation at the earliest to avoid a prolonged transfer saga.
