Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in the world.

The Liverpool captain has been incredible for a long time now, he’s been on the Ballon d’Or podium, and he’s won every trophy there is to win at club level.

Van Dijk has recently been described as a ‘fantastic’ centre-back. However, while Van Dijk is a world-class defender, a player of his talents could probably do a job in other areas of the pitch.

Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, he has been discussing which other position he could play for Liverpool, and the Dutchman believes he’d be able to play as a striker.

Virgil van Dijk says he could be a striker for Liverpool

Van Dijk discussed which other position he’d be able to play.

Due to his defensive abilities, one may imagine that Van Dijk would say he’s capable of being a holding midfield player.

However, the Reds’ skipper says he could play as a striker, claiming that he’d be more than capable of scoring goals if he played up front.

“If you could play in any other position what would you play? Think about this one, we’ve seen the defending, we’ve seen goals, and we’ve seen you take on a couple of players,” Van Dijk was asked.

“Striker, yeah, I could get a couple of goals I think, yeah,” Van Dijk said.

Could Virgil van Dijk play as a striker?

It may sound strange to hear a defender claim he could play up front, but if there’s any player who can do it, it’s Van Dijk.

Indeed, the Dutchman has all of the attributes needed to be a centre-forward.

Van Dijk has been hailed as the strongest player in the Premier League, while Mohamed Salah also claimed he’s one of the fastest players at Liverpool.

Van Dijk also isn’t lacking in the technique department either.

Back during his time at Celtic, Van Dijk was a regular free-kick taker, and while he’s not been given that responsibility at Liverpool., there have been some calls for Van Dijk to start taking free-kicks.

Of course, we’re unlikely to ever see it due to his defensive excellence, but if Liverpool are ever chasing a game in the final minutes, Arne Slot could do a lot worse than putting Van Dijk up front.
