Liverpool fans call to see Van Dijk start taking free kicks

Liverpool fans want Van Dijk to start taking free kicks.

The big Dutch defender has a number of strings to bow, with free kick taking one of them.

The 30-year-old has scored them before in his career and now the fans are calling for him to take them at Anfield.

The current taker in the side is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, a lot of fans have been bemoaning the fact that the right-back rarely tests the goalkeeper.

It certainly helps their cause that a video of Van Dijk rattling a free kick in off the bar in training exists.

Regardless of this evidence of Van Dijk’s deadball abilities, he still never steps up.

In his career, Van Dijk has netted four direct free kicks, three for Celtic and one for Groningen (Transfermarkt).

However, for the Reds he’s seemingly never even in the mix to step up and have a hit.

However, despite his ability to whip a perfect cross in and find teammates with his passing ability, his free kicks have frustrated fans.

Giving the Dutchman the chance to strike from dead balls could prove beneficial.

It would certainly provide him with the opportunity to add to his goal tally for the club.

So far, Van Dijk has 13 goals in 136 games for the Reds (Transfermarkt) and could even add to that if he were to be given direct free kicks.

The Reds will want to be in the title mix this season.

If Van Dijk can add an extra couple of goals then it could swing a few games and earn Liverpool a couple of extra points.

It’s certainly what the fans are keen to see.
