‘Very interesting’: Journalist now says Chelsea are ahead of Tottenham to sign ‘amazing' World Cup forward

Tottenham Hotspur know they’re likely to face competition whenever they try to sign the world’s best players.

In order to compete at the very top, Antonio Conte knows they still need a few new recruits.

A report from Ben Jacobs, via Give Me Sport, has provided an update on one of their targets.

Since arriving at Spurs, Conte has concentrated on bringing in players capable of making an immediate impact in the first team.

Dejan Kulusevski and Cristian Romero are two prime examples, although they’ve both got years ahead of them to improve.

One player who Tottenham have been linked with who is only at the very start of his career is Youssoufa Moukoko.

The ‘amazing’ forward has just turned 18, but has already gone to a World Cup with Germany and scored 11 senior goals for Dortmund.

He was incredible going through the youth teams, scoring 137 goals in 81 games for Dortmund’s under-17s and under-19s.

It’s a record that has unsurprisingly meant there’s a lot of interest in the forward.

However, Jacobs now suggests that Chelsea are leading the race to sign Moukoko ahead of Spurs.

Given his immense potential, it’s a deal that Conte may want to really push going into January.

Spurs were first linked with Moukoko last month, as 90min suggested they had been scouting him in Germany.

Moukoko’s contract runs out at the end of the season, meaning foreign clubs can approach him in January.

The Times believe Moukoko is holding out for a deal worth £115,000-a-week at Dortmund.

Understandably, Dortmund will want to continue negotiating, but given the Premier League interest in him, Moukoko is in a strong spot during talks.

The 18-year-old is an incredible finisher for his age, has a brilliant work-rate and links up play well.

Not the most physically imposing player yet, he’s got good balance and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Jacobs has revealed that Chelsea are leading the race for Moukoko.

Spurs may struggle to compete financially with the contract they could offer the young German.

The Blues are also short of forward options, after losing Armando Broja to a serious knee injury.

“Chelsea are the frontrunners at the moment and he fits their mould absolutely perfectly,” Jacobs said.

“I think that is why they’re very seriously entertaining that particular signing and we know from Moukoko’s agent that he hasn’t yet and isn’t close to signing a new deal at Dortmund.

“This is a very interesting scenario because, from Dortmund’s point of view, they’ll want him to sign in January and that will rule out a January move.”
