‘Unbelievable’: Gary Neville left stunned by how much better £30m midfielder has got since leaving Tottenham
There are a number of players who have left Tottenham Hotspur in the recent past who fans will wish hadn’t done so.
Spurs have been brilliant at identifying fantastic talent, but haven’t always been able to hold onto them at the peaks of their careers.
Speaking on his podcast, Gary Neville has been talking about one such player.
The World Cup has given a number of these stars the biggest platform to perform on.
Gareth Bale played his best football for Real Madrid after helping Tottenham return to the Champions League.
Although he couldn’t help Wales’ campaign, his five Champions League winner’s medals show just how good he’s been.
Another player that went on to even greater things after leaving Spurs was Luka Modric.
The 37-year-old left Tottenham in 2012 for a £30m fee, which now looks like an absolute bargain.
Modric has improved so much since leaving Spurs, which in itself is impressive given how good he was at White Hart Lane.
The metronomic midfielder is still at the World Cup, as Croatia continue to punch above their weight at major tournaments.
He’ll be hoping to go one better than four years ago, and guide his country to their first trophy.
Modric has improved so much since leaving Spurs – Neville
Speaking on his podcast about the impressive midfielder, Neville said: “Modric is a star. How he has gone from Tottenham – where he was a fantastic player.
“But what he’s gone on to since is unbelievable.
“Every pass he makes it a beautiful pass, even a simple pass, the weight of it, he passes to the right side of the player who is receiving it, it’s perfection.”
Tottenham’s current midfield is one of the strongest positions in their team.
Rodrigo Bentancur has really impressed, and has previously been compared to Modric.
The fact that Modric improved so much that he went on to win a Ballon d’Or shows just how good he’s been at Real Madrid.
Spurs are no longer a club that need to sell their players before they reach their peak.
The likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are both world class, and have spent the best years of their careers at the club.
That hasn’t stopped Real Madrid sniffing around one of their stars once again.
