Tottenham surprisingly include £20m player in squad to face Hearts

A surprising sight has been spotted in a video Tottenham just posted on X (previously known as Twitter).

Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs squad face Hearts in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening, where a player who many doubted would ever feature again for Tottenham could appear.

So, what is the situation? Let’s take a look…

Djed Spence involved in Tottenham squad to face Hearts

At 1:23 in a video uploaded by Tottenham, showing Postecoglou and the players heading to Edinburgh, Djed Spence could be seen speaking to Lucas Bergvall.

It was quite a shock to see the £20m man involved, as only a matter of days have passed since he actually came close to leaving Spurs for Genoa.

The Italian side could have signed Spence for £8.5m after his initial loan spell at the end of last season, but decided against triggering the option, a decision which sent the Londoner back to Hotspur Way.

Many expected Postecoglou to be quite ruthless with the Englishman and leave him out of pre-season this summer, after Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail claimed that the right-back has no future in N17 while Postecoglou is in charge.

It was suggested that the 58-year-old was furious with Spence after Leeds cut short his season-long loan spell last term, while the Evening Standard have also previously claimed that the defender angered Postecoglou with his timekeeping and general attitude during pre-season in 2023.

Therefore, it is quite a surprise to see Spence involved in the trip to Hearts – to say the least.

23-year-old has an opportunity

Spence would be wise to knuckle down and take this opportunity seriously, as there could soon be an opening under Postecoglou.

Emerson Royal looks set to join AC Milan this summer, which would leave a gap in the right-back department behind Pedro Porro.

Postecoglou will need a backup option for the Spain international with UEFA Europa League football on the schedule next season, so Spence could earn a place as the Spaniard’s No.2 if he impresses during pre-season this summer.

Hopefully, the 23-year-old does exactly that, as he is a tremendously talented footballer when he wants to be.
