The story of Dusan Vlahovic was one that dominated the January window as a host of English clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham and even Newcastle, all courted the Serbian.

In the end, as we all know, Vlahovic opted to move to Juventus, who agreed to pay around £70m for the in-form striker.

As we reported on TBR in January, Tottenham were said to be still among the team sniffing as the deadline loomed large for English clubs. However, things might have been so different for Tottenham and Vlahovic, had the club sold Harry Kane on last summer.

Kane was the subject of intense interest from Manchester City. Indeed, it’s claimed City even offered a package worth around £100m for the striker. And according to The Telegraph, had Kane left, it was Spurs’ plan to go and spend the majority of that fee on Vlahovic.

It is claimed Vlahovic would have cost around the £70m mark even last summer. And while Spurs were keen, there was a tentativeness around selling Kane and then re-investing so much in just one player. Tottenham’s loss, then, appears to have been to Juventus’ gain.

TBR’s View: Conundrum For Tottenham Last Summer

What a nightmare scenario for Spurs. Of course, they could have cashed in on Kane as we all know. But Daniel Levy must have known the chances of replacing him properly were slim. Even with such interest in the ‘outstanding‘ Vlahovic.

Further, while Vlahovic is one of the in-form strikers in Europe, he is still very much a young player who is just on a hot streak. For all people know, he could very much slow down while in Turin.

Still, this just shows the pressures of trying to sort out your club. For now, keeping Kane seems the smart decision.
