Tottenham Hotspur were heavily linked with a move for Torino defender Gleison Bremer last month but a deal did not materialise.
Spurs were desperate for a new centre-back in January but Antonio Conte did not get his wish. That explains all of his interviews recently and to be fair to him, he has every right to be annoyed.
Tottenham’s backline has been really poor in recent weeks. They’ve lost three games on the bounce in the Premier League now and the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Emerson Royal have been at fault on more than one occasion.
Conte’s January target Bremer, on the other hand, has been a star in Italy and his stats are better than most defenders in the Premier League this season, including Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, who is the best in the country in many people’s eyes.
Tottenham-linked Bremer is outperforming Antonio Rudiger
Both Bremer and Rudiger have played 23 games in the league this term but the Torino man’s stats are much more impressive.
Rudiger averages one interception, 1.2 tackles and 2.7 clearances per game. For someone who gets so much credit for his heading, the German only boasts of an average of two aerial wins per 90 minutes, which is not bad, but it’s not amazing either. (WhoScored)
Bremer, on the other hand, averages 1.4 tackles, 3.6 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per game. His success in aerial duels is fantastic as well having won 3.8 per 90 this season, almost twice as many as Rudiger. (WhoScored)
WhoScored rates Bremer 7.22/10 this season while Rudiger is given a rating of 6.89.

Spurs should be gutted
Tottenham’s struggles at the back are evident for everyone to see. Conte’s sides over the years have almost always been defensively solid but his current team is a long way off at the moment.
Bremer, still only 24, is one of the best defenders in Serie A and he could have helped Conte solve the issues he has in defence.
Torino Granata revealed in December that Bremer was high on Conte’s January wish list, while CalcioMercato claimed around the same time that Torino value him at just £15 million, less than what Spurs paid for Rodrigo Bentancur.
Tottenham couldn’t get a deal done last month and considering how well Bremer is playing, it won’t be a surprise to see him receive an offer from a top European club in the summer. Spurs and Conte should really be gutted!
