Tottenham know Gordon isn't close to new Everton contract - journalist

Journalist Paul Brown has told Give Me Sport that Tottenham Hotspur know Anthony Gordon is not close to signing a new contract at Everton, and they may look to make a fresh move for the 21-year-old in January.

Toffees fans must have feared that Gordon would leave Goodison Park in the summer. Of course, the closest he seemed to come to leaving came when Chelsea made a move. Reports suggested that the youngster wanted to join the Blues.

But one of the first bids of the window probably came from Tottenham. In fact, reports claimed that Spurs made a £100 million offer for Richarlison and Gordon.

Richarlison ultimately made the move. But Gordon did not follow the Brazilian to North London.

The youngster has gone on to score twice in the first seven Premier League games of the campaign. So it is no surprise that Everton want to hand Gordon a new contract.

However, Brown does not believe that the winger is close to extending his terms on Merseyside. And Tottenham are aware of that fact.

“I think it’s up to Everton to change his mind. Otherwise, they’re going to be in the same situation they were with him come January,” he told Give Me Sport.

“It may be that the interest from those two clubs has waned a bit by then. We’ll see.

“But, if he has a brilliant few months, you can guarantee that Spurs, Chelsea and possibly other teams will be sniffing around because they know from his advisors that Gordon is not about to sign a new long-term deal tomorrow with Everton.”

January could prove to be a crucial month for Tottenham. The early signs suggest that it could be a really special season for Antonio Conte’s side.

Right now, they are looking to battle on four fronts. And with that, they may want to dip into the market in the winter to strengthen their ranks further.

Obviously, Gordon would not come cheap. Reports in the summer suggested that he would cost £60 million.

But he has been described as ‘sensational‘. And he continues to make an impact in the top-flight. So it would be a real statement if they could now agree a deal in one of the coming windows.
