England Under-21s are into the semi-finals of the European Championships, however, it was a disappointing night for Archie Gray.
Archie Gray probably played a lot more than he was expecting to for Spurs last season, with injuries thrusting him into a prominent role in the squad.
The only trouble was that he was playing out of position as the teenager featured in every role across Tottenham’s back-line from left-back, right-back to centre-back.
Therefore, whilst it was a good season of learning for the youngster, there were undoubtedly times where he struggled, and his mixed form has continued into the European Championships for England Under-21.

Archie Gray benched for England U21 vs Spain
Gray was benched for England Under-21’s 3-1 win over Spain on Saturday, which has left Tottenham Hotspur supporters questioning the midfielder.
Spurs fans are concerned that the £40 million player can’t even manage to get a start for the young Three Lions, and he failed to even come off the bench.
The 18-year-old was subbed off after 63 minutes in the final group stage game, having had a tricky game in defence.
Tottenham’s supporters were also annoyed Gray has been playing at right-back for Lee Carsley’s team, where the teenager also played a large number of minutes.
After seeing the youngster starting on the bench, Tottenham supporters took to X to share their frustration at him failing to make the team.
One Spurs fan said: “Most Spurs fans told me Archie Gray was well worth £40m when I raised the question when he signed, hope he proves to be in the end.
“I’m not one for writing youngsters off early, I just hope Frank and his coaching team can get the best out of him.”
Another fan couldn’t believe that he was benched for England U21: “Archie Gray being benched for Tyler Morton is really weird.”
Thomas Frank could be the man to unlock Archie Gray’s potential
Thomas Frank could be just the right manager to help unlock Gray’s potential, with the Danish coach having previously shown a fondness for the teenager.
Frank tried to sign Gray before his move to Tottenham, with the former Leeds United player having undergone a medical at Brentford.
The 51-year-old will finally get his hands on the talented teenager now, and this could be great news for his development.
| Position | Games |
| Centre-back | 20 |
| Right-back | 9 |
| Midfield | 7 |
| Left-back | 5 |
Gray will be hoping for more minutes in his favoured midfield role and he could get that in what is likely to be a more protected role than what he would have had under Ange Postecoglou.
Micky van de Ven was impressed by Gray last season and the Dutch defender believes that his ability to fill multiple roles shows his Premier League quality.
