Tottenham and Arsenal target Cody Gakpo compared to Robin van Persie

Reported Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal target Cody Gakpo is shining at the Word Cup in Qatar, and he has now been compared to Robin van Persie.

The 23-year-old PSV Eindhoven star has been in the form of his life since the start of the campaign. He has carried that confidence to the biggest stage in world football and helped his country win their opener this week.

Gakpo is a wanted man. A number of clubs in the Premier League, including Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United, want to sign him, and his numbers will tell you why.

For PSV since the start of the season, Gakpo has scored 13 goals and has provided 17 assists in all competitions. He scored a couple in the Nations League as well for the Netherlands and has topped that off with a goal at the World Cup now.

The £40 million-rated forward got on the end of a lovely ball from Frenkie De Jong late in the game against Senegal. He was in an awkward position to head the ball, but he improvised and managed to find the net with the back of his skull.

Gakpo has since been compared to Van Persie – a player both Arsenal and Tottenham fans know very well.

The 23-year-old told FIFA+ about the comparisons: “He’s a legendary player in the Netherlands and in the whole world.

“It’s an honour for me to be compared to him, but at the end of the day, I’m my own player. I have to prove myself and do my best.”

It’s not often that Arsenal and Tottenham fans agree on something, but we think both sets of supporters dislike Van Persie – albeit for two very different reasons.

The Dutchman was always excellent against Spurs back in the day. He scored six goals and provided six assists against them in 18 appearances, and Tottenham fans just didn’t like how he almost always turned up in the derby.

For Arsenal supporters, Van Persie was a hero for many, many years. However, after Arsene Wenger made him the best striker in the Premier League, he decided to leave the Gunners for Manchester United.

Gunners fans still dislike Van Persie for what he did over a decade ago, but if the Dutchman can convince Gakpo to make a move to the Emirates, Arsenal supporters may forgive him a little bit.
