Report: Liverpool have now made their move to sign 'brilliant' World Cup star in January

Liverpool have made contact with PSV Eindhoven over the prospect of signing their Dutch international forward Cody Gakpo.

Italian outlet CMW claim that the Reds have made their first move to try and sign the World Cup star, who is also wanted by Manchester United.

And the main reason the Italian publication are so across Gakpo’s future is that there is also interest from AC Milan ahead of the winter window.

But the report says that Milan are struggling in the race, because Gakpo prefers the prospect of the Premier League and the Italian giants would find it hard to compete financially in the race.

Liverpool make contact over signing Gakpo

Liverpool and United have taken the most interest in him and the Reds have been told it would cost 45-50 million euros (£39-£44 million) to sign him in January.

The report also says that if Gakpo continues to impress on the world stage, PSV’s asking price could go up and up from here.

Gakpo opened the scoring in the Netherlands’ 2-0 win over Senegal yesterday, during a tight game in which a draw would have been a fairer result.

That header drew praise from Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live, who said: “They (Netherlands) just needed that moment of quality.

“The ball was on the money. Gakpo just had to find the pace of the ball, whipped in brilliantly by De Jong. It comes off the back of his head, it’s brilliant innovation from Gakpo.

“That’s a huge goal from a Netherlands team who really haven’t threatened in this second half. Mendy shouldn’t come, he gambles. Dreadful goalkeeping from Mendy, it really is.”
