‘The way he’s playing’: TalkSPORT pundit now believes Everton star could ‘gatecrash’ England’s World Cup squad

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested that Everton winger Anthony Gordon could ‘gatecrash’ England’s World Cup squad.

Speaking on TalkSPORT (29/9 8:44am), Agbonlahor was asked about the 21-year-old’s England prospects.

The former Aston Villa striker believes that Gordon’s recent form could give Gareth Southgate a tough decision to make.

Agbonlahor was asked by Alan Brazil, if he would take Gordon, Jadon Sancho or Jarrod Bowen.

The TalkSPORT pundit replied:  “I think if (Anthony) Gordon continues, the way he’s playing at the moment, he can gatecrash that England squad.”

“I think Jarrod Bowen, he’s got a lot to prove over the next six weeks, he needs to get goals and assists back in his game.

“Sancho needs to continue his form, and sometimes manager’s like to take that one player who people don’t expect to go to a World Cup.”

Gordon could gatecrash World Cup squad

It’s been a whirlwind summer for Anthony Gordon, with several clubs chasing his signature.

Everton had to fend off interest from Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle to keep hold of the young winger.

However, iNews now report that Everton are close to agreeing a new contract with Gordon.

Gordon already has a couple of Premier League goals this season, and has looked brilliant in Frank Lampard’s side.

He’s had double the number of shots on target compared to any of his Everton teammates (stats via FBref).

“Anthony is too important a player (for Everton)” Lampard said as speculation mounted about his future.

England are going into the World Cup with plenty of question marks over a number of key positions.

Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden were selected by Gareth Southgate to flank Harry Kane in the most recent Nations League games.

However, it was substitutes Bukayo Saka and Mason Mount who changed the game off the bench against Germany.

The Everton man’s direct style mirrors Saka more closely than Southgate’s other options.

He would have impressed the England hierarchy with his contributions for the under-21 side this week.

Gordon provided assists for Folarin Balogun and Conor Gallagher in the Young Lions 3-1 win against Germany.

Gordon could gatecrash England’s World Cup squad if he continues to impress at Goodison Park, and Southgate decides he needs another wide option to run at full-backs.
