'The first thing everybody said': Sean McGurk shares how friends and family reacted when Leeds bid

Sean McGurk has shared to Leeds United’s official website what all of his friends and family said about the club when they heard that the Whites wanted to sign him.

McGurk became Leeds’s fourth signing of the summer on Thursday. The 18-year-old follows Amari Miller, Jack Harrison and Junior Firpo through the door at Elland Road.

It is potentially an inspired piece of business. Certainly, plenty of Wigan fans have expressed their disappointment at his departure.

McGurk has previously been linked with the likes of Rangers and Spurs. So Leeds could definitely feel they have produced a coup.

But judging by the teenager’s comments about the move, it would appear that he is the one pinching himself as he shared what those around him said when the links with Leeds emerged.

“The football the club plays as a whole is very exciting, it’s free-flowing football and with the type of player I am, I think I will suit it well,” he told the club’s official website.

“When my friends and family found out that Leeds were interested, the first thing everybody said was how big of a club it is, so Leeds wanting to sign me is a massive honour and I can’t wait to get going.

“People describe me as a player who is quite exciting, I like to create goals and score goals and I think that is the strongest part of my game.”

McGurk has fantastic platform at Leeds to take game to next level

Obviously, it is likely Leeds fans will have to wait some time before they see McGurk make his first-team debut.

It says a lot about the Thorp Arch demands that someone like Joe Gelhardt is still awaiting the chance to play for Marcelo Bielsa. He had an incredible year with the under-23s.

But playing for Mark Jackson’s men can provide an amazing platform for young players.

Supporters watch the under-23 games in their droves. So the fans already know an incredible amount about the club’s brightest youngsters long before they get a first-team debut.

And it should come as little surprise if the supporters take very little time to get excited about what the future holds for McGurk.
