‘Talk about it’: ‘Incredible’ Tottenham target drops hint over contract situation, Antonio Conte really wanted to sign him
Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a move for AS Roma winger Nicolo Zaniolo this summer and the player has now shared an update on his contract situation.
Conte’s men apparently came the closest to landing Zaniolo but their former boss Jose Mourinho reportedly blocked the move.
Spurs enjoyed a busy summer window as they brought in seven new players, with Destiny Udogie remaining at Udinese on a season-long loan.
But Conte didn’t manage to bring in the ‘incredible’ Zaniolo and now the player has addressed the speculation over the summer.
Zaniolo drops hint over contract situation
Speaking in a press conference after returning from a spell on the sidelines, the Italian winger hinted that he could open talks with Roma over a new deal.
“It wasn’t an unusual summer for me, it always seems like I have to leave and then I stay, these are speculations and thoughts you have,” he told Football Italia.
“I still have a year and a half left on my contract to talk about it, it’s not the right time right now because we have HJK Helsinki and Atalanta, I’m focused on the pitch.”
Zaniolo would have certainly been a great addition for Conte and has bounced back brilliantly from two serious knee injuries in recent years.
The winger has only made two appearances this season due to suffering a shoulder injury in Roma’s opening Europa League game.
But he returned to the squad over the weekend as he was named amongst the substitutes by Mourinho.
The Italian is now into the last two years of his contract at Roma and if he doesn’t sign a new deal over the course of the season, he could become available for Spurs.
It seems that Zaniolo is relaxed about his contract situation as he said that he has time to talk to the club.
But Spurs will certainly be keeping one eye on his situation as he is clearly a player that both Paratici and Conte like.
