Report: Roma just walked away from Tottenham talks over Zaniolo

Roma have walked away from talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a deal for Nicolo Zaniolo over the last few days, according to a report from Corriere dello Sport.

Zaniolo has been a top target for Tottenham in this window. And it seemed that he was ready to make the move to North London.

Roma value Zaniolo at £42 million. And Corriere dello Sport reports that Spurs were the only side to come close to meeting that valuation.

Reports earlier this month claimed that he had his bags packed at one stage. However, Jose Mourinho has been desperate to ensure that the 23-year-old stays put.

And it seems that the Portuguese has now got one over on his old club. According to a report from Corriere dello Sport, talks have now stopped between Roma and Tottenham.

In fact, Zaniolo could now sign a new contract with the Giallorossi. Talks will start over an extension until 2026.

Spurs will be optimistic that Zaniolo signing a new contract does not mean the end of their hopes of a deal. The club are making real progress under Antonio Conte.

The longer the Italian sticks around, the more likely it is that Tottenham will contend for silverware in the near future. Roma meanwhile, have an incredibly difficult task trying to make that next leap.

Zaniolo was reportedly ready to join Tottenham. So if the Giallorossi do not close the gap to the top-four, he may be open to moving on in the future.

The attacking midfielder is an ‘incredible‘ talent. And he will want to play in the biggest competitions.

So Zaniolo extending his contract at Roma may count for little come the end of the season – depending on how the two clubs’ campaigns play out.
