Steven Gerrard sends message to Ross Wilson as ex-Rangers and Forest director joins Newcastle United

Steven Gerrard has turned down the Rangers job after Russell Martin’s sacking earlier this month, but that hasn’t stopped him wishing former colleague Ross Wilson good luck after his move to Newcastle.

Ross Wilson’s move to Newcastle was confirmed on Saturday after just under a year in the role at the City Ground, seeing him replace Paul Mitchell, who also left Newcastle within a year after failing to replace his predecessor Dan Ashworth.

It coincides with the Rangers managerial vacancy, with Russell Martin’s shocking start to the season seeing him removed from his duties after three months in the dugout, and it has since sparked conversations over a return for Steven Gerrard.

But despite being out of work since January, Gerrard has turned down Rangers’ advances.

However, that hasn’t stopped him sending his best wishes for Wilson in a huge move away from Nottingham Forest ahead of the January transfer window.

Gerrard’s relationship with Wilson gave Rangers their most successful period since their exile to the fourth division of Scottish football in 2012.

Wilson joined the Light Blues in 2019, a year after Gerrard had been appointed as boss, and that kickstarted a period of success for the Ibrox side.

Although the Scouse native only won the Scottish Premiership in his three-year tenure in Glasgow, his recruitment and the mentality instilled in the Rangers team was the backbone for later cup wins and European runs under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Philippe Clement.

And Gerrard has sent his former colleague a good luck message, telling Wilson that Newcastle is a ‘great club’ for him to join. Gerrard wrote on Instagram: “Congratulations @ross_wilson7, great club for you best of luck mate”, followed by a handshake emoji.

The likes of Ianis Hagi, Calvin Bassey, Jermain Defoe, Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram, Amad Diallo, Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin were all signings under Wilson, with Bassey especially a success story after a huge move to Ajax earning Rangers a lot of profit.

If Newcastle can deliver the same success under Eddie Howe on a relative scale, Wilson could be a good addition to propel the Magpies to the next level.

Ross Wilson’s signings at Nottingham Forest will give Newcastle fans hope

Ross Wilson moving to Newcastle from Nottingham Forest comes with a sense of intrigue.

He bought Anthony Elanga from Manchester United for a cut-price £15million fee, where he finally had a clear run of game time in the Premier League before joining Newcastle this summer for £55million, marking almost a 300 percent return on investment.

Elsewhere, he masterminded a deal that many Magpies fans wished hadn’t happened as Elliot Anderson headed to the East Midlands with goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Chris Wood, a former Newcastle signing, has also excelled in his time at Forest, and so there are links between the two clubs.

Whether Wilson can repeat those same strokes of genius remains to be seen but Newcastle fans should be buoyed.
