Hearts manager Derek McInnes remains an option alongside Danny Rohl after Steven Gerrard decided against returning to Ibrox following further talks with the club on Saturday, TBR Football understands.
After lengthy talks on Thursday, Gerrard had agreed in principle to return to the club for a second spell – but the details of the deal were not agreed and the move was called off by the former Liverpool boss.
We can reveal that Rangers chairman Andrew Cavanagh made another approach on Sunday to try and convince Gerrard, the out-and-out first choice, but the answer was a reluctant no.

Now Rangers are working on other options, although Sean Dyche is again not in the running, having turned down the chance to speak further with the club following initial talks.
Exclusive: Rangers keen on Derek McInnes and Danny Rohl
Now we can confirm that Hearts boss Derek McInnes – who flew back to Scotland on Sunday following a holiday in America – remains someone held in high regard by the Gers hierarchy, as does Kevin Muscat.
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is also keen, but we can confirm that Championship side Norwich City have an interest in him.
Our chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey, revealed: “I understand that Andrew Cavanagh is gutted about not being able to get Gerrard over the line; it was almost done – he had agreed in principle. But as with many deals in football, it is the finer details that can’t be overcome.
“Gers sources insist there are plenty of options available to them and they insist no stone is being left unturned, but at this point it looks like McInnes and Rohl are the leading candidates, but I am told there are some other strong names, from abroad, that are being considered.
“They know after the Russell Martin fiasco, they have to get this one right.”
