Steven Gerrard says Liverpool have a midfielder who plays just like he did at Anfield

Steven Gerrard has singled out a current Liverpool midfielder, claiming the player reminds him of himself during his own playing days at Anfield.

The former captain is regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history and one of the club’s biggest legends.

Steven Gerrard, who captained Liverpool for over a decade and famously led them to multiple trophies, including the famous Champions League win in 2005, does not always make such direct comparisons.

Since his retirement, the Reds have not found a successor to the iconic No.8. Fans once thought they had found one in Naby Keita, but he was never able to remain consistent, largely due to his injury issues.

Gerrard has now named the Liverpool player who reminds him of himself.

Steven Gerrard says he sees himself in Dominik Szoboszlai

In a light-hearted, quick-fire interview with TNT Sports, Gerrard was asked which current Liverpool player reminds him of himself.

The former England midfielder was quick to name Dominik Szoboszlai.

Gerrard also named Mohamed Salah as the one player he wishes he had played alongside and mentioned the famous Chelsea slip in 2014 as the moment that still haunts him.

What Dominik Szoboszlai has said about comparisons with Steven Gerrard

Arriving from RB Leipzig in July 2023, Szoboszlai quickly emerged as a driving force in Liverpool’s midfield, impressing fans and pundits with his incredible energy and relentless work rate.

He made an immediate impact at the club, putting in several Man of the Match performances. He also scored a screamer from outside the box against Aston Villa, earning comparisons with Gerrard very early on.

Szoboszlai welcomed the comparison with Gerrard but insisted that he’d like to carve out his own path at Anfield.

Despite wanting to forge his own identity, the Hungarian made it clear he wouldn’t hesitate to follow in Gerrard’s legendary footsteps if given the opportunity.

He told BBC Sport: “Feels great that they say I’m the new Steven Gerrard, and since Gerrard, they didn’t have a midfielder like me.

“I don’t want to be him, I want to be myself. But of course, if they put a paper in front of me and say ‘you’re going to have the same career here in Liverpool’, I’m going to sign it then!”
