Keith Downie has delivered a fresh Kieran Trippier transfer update amid reports that the Newcastle United defender could join Bayern Munich.

The German giants have been strongly linked with a move for the England international in recent days, with Trippier reportedly keen on joining Bayern this January.

However, the transfer saga has moved along, and it’s now looking likely that Trippier will stay with the Magpies for the remainder of the season, despite Newcastle needing to sell.

And speaking on Sky Sports News outside St. James’ Park this morning, Downie has said Trippier will not be sold for any price this January, with the right-back set to remain with the Premier League side.

Downie said: “This one hasn’t really moved too much since the weekend when we brought you the news Newcastle had rejected an approach. Kieran Trippier without a doubt was flattered by the move and he was open to hearing what they had to say.

“But I think when Newcastle realised what Bayern were offering was a permanent transfer or a loan deal they realised that this was a deal they did not want to accept and Trippier is now most likely to remain a Newcastle United player certainly until the summer, Eddie Howe wants to keep one of his talisman. The noises coming from Newcastle over the last 24 hours are that he will not be sold for any price.”

Whilst Newcastle have to sell this January if they’re to stand a chance of making any signings this month, offloading Trippier would have been a poor decision from the Toon.

The right-back has been one of Eddie Howe’s best players during his tenure at the club, and Trippier was key last season in Newcastle qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

However, this summer could see Trippier secure his move to Bayern, with the reigning-Bundesliga champions likely to reignite their interest in signing the England international.

Indeed, if Newcastle miss out on Europe, the Magpies could be helpless in Trippier leaving for Bayern, where the right-back could be an ideal fit for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
