‘Running in quicksand’: TalkSPORT pundit has been really disappointed with two West Ham players this season

West Ham United couldn’t have asked for a tougher start to the Christmas period when they travelled to Arsenal on Boxing Day.

At half-time, it looked like they might be on their way to an unlikely victory over the league leaders.

However, it wasn’t to be, and speaking on TalkSPORT, Perry Groves has given his verdict on the Hammers squad.

Said Benrahma gave West Ham the lead from the penalty spot after good work from Jarrod Bowen.

However, they couldn’t withstand the onslaught of Arsenal pressure in the second half and ultimately fell to another defeat.

There was an element of luck to the Gunners first goal, but Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah’s strikes both could have been dealt with better.

Martinelli was allowed to shoot far too easily by Vladimir Coufal before Lukasz Fabianski let the ball in his near post.

Meanwhile, Thilo Kehrer was too easily spun by Nketiah for Arsenal’s third.

Groves spoke about the new signings made by the Hammers during the summer, and their lack of impact thus far.

He also said that Coufal and Tomas Soucek had both been disappointing compared to previous seasons.

A combination of issues has resulted in Moyes’ side sitting perilously close to the bottom three.

Coufal and Soucek have disappointed for West Ham

Speaking on TalkSPORT about the Hammers, Groves said: “It seems that David Moyes is sometimes a bit reluctant to put these new players in, he wants to make they’re embedded first in the way he wants them to play.

“But again, football moves on very quickly.

“The other thing I’m looking at as well, especially on Monday, when I saw [Tomas] Soucek and [Vladimir] Coufal.

“They look like they’re running in quicksand.

“They don’t look anywhere near as influential as they were when they first came into the side.”

The Czech duo quickly became cult heroes at West Ham when they arrived from Slavia Prague.

Soucek has formed a fantastic partnership with Declan Rice in midfield, but has admitted this season his form hasn’t been up to scratch.

Coufal, meanwhile, has been subject to recent speculation about his future at the London Stadium.

Journalist Dharmesh Sheth has suggested that Coufal is no longer part of Moyes’ plans.

Coufal and Soucek have both disappointed this season, and will need to pick up their form soon to remain in the side.

In fact, aside from Rice, the whole squad have struggled compared to their previous campaign.

It’s no wonder right now that they’re looking over their shoulders right now, rather than up the table.
