Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Leeds United will only make a last-ditch bid for Cody Gakpo if Daniel James leaves in the final hours of the transfer window.

The Leeds hierarchy may have hoped that deadline day would be a quiet one at Elland Road. They did a lot of their business early on in the window.

However, much of the fanbase appears to be crying out for another attacking player to come in. Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo have both picked up injuries already this season.

It seems however, that it may only be another player leaving that may trigger Leeds into action. Reports have recently claimed that Tottenham want to sign Daniel James and have been in talks with the Whites.

Jesse Marsch’s men want Hwang Hee-chan. But another name in the mix is Gakpo. Andrea Radrizzani alerted many supporters by liking a tweet saying Leeds want the 23-year-old.

Gakpo looks destined for a Premier League move in the final hours of the window. But it is Southampton who lead the charge. 90min reports that the Saints are confident of signing the Dutchman.

PSV Eindhoven want £25 million for the youngster. And that may be leaving plenty of Leeds fans imploring the board to act before he heads elsewhere. However, one deal will have to happen first before the Whites make any bid for Gakpo.

Romano has now reported on Twitter that Leeds will only move for Gakpo if James leaves first…

Leeds fans will have mixed feelings about the update. Clearly, it will be a real sickener for many to see Gakpo potentially join a Premier League rival. And it does seem that he may be Southampton-bound if someone does not act quickly.

But Leeds need another attacking player on top of what they already have. If James leaves and Gakpo comes in, the amount of depth will still be a concern.
