Rio Ferdinand urges Newcastle to go all out for Anthony Martial

Rio Ferdinand has told his YouTube channel that he would be going all out to try and sign Anthony Martial on loan if he was Newcastle United as the Magpies continue their push to sign a new striker.

Martial has endured a torrid season with Manchester United. He has only made seven appearances in the Premier League, scoring once. And he has not featured since the win over Arsenal in early December.

He could be on the move from Old Trafford this month. In fact, it was previously suggested Newcastle were prepared to spend £6 million to take him on loan for the rest of the season.

Fabrizio Romano subsequently said on Twitter that Newcastle and Tottenham had seen approaches for Martial rejected. Joining another English club does not appeal to the Frenchman.

Nevertheless, Ferdinand insisted that Newcastle should leave no stone unturned while Martial is available.

“Martial, the rumours are that he doesn’t want to stay in the Premier League. Going abroad maybe, Sevilla were one of the teams mentioned, Juventus maybe,” he told his YouTube channel.

“If I was Newcastle, I’d be going all out to try and get Martial on loan.”

Martial form would be a major concern for Newcastle as they target loan

Newcastle have already signed one striker who was not in the best form this month. Chris Wood left Burnley having scored three times in the Premier League.

Martial clearly has the potential to be an amazing signing. Robin van Persie previously suggested that he was ‘world-class‘. However, this season has been a real struggle for the 26-year-old.

So expecting him to hit the ground running and inspire Newcastle’s push up the table would be asking a lot.

Another striker Newcastle have their eye on is Duvan Zapata. Unlike Martial, Zapata is in the form of his life right now.

Reports have claimed that the Magpies have already agreed personal terms with the Colombian. So it would appear that they have thrown in the towel when it comes to Martial.

Ferdinand may suggest otherwise. But signing Zapata probably looks to be the safer bet for Eddie Howe’s men.
