David Moyes wanted to bring in Keane to provide some cover at centre-back, but injuries to Yerry Mina and Ben Godfrey mean Everton are struggling with a crisis of their own.
Keane was signed by Everton for £30m in 2017, and has won ten caps with England since moving to the Toffees.

However, he’s not been involved in the squad since 2020, and Jamie Carragher believes the defender was ‘really poor’ last season.
West Ham have Keane bid rejected
Everton were in a position before the season started to let some of their defensive options leave, after Conor Coady and James Tarkowski were brought in to improve their centre-back options.
It looks like West Ham will have to look elsewhere to bolster their ranks though, with Yerry Mina – who has also been linked with a move away – and Ben Godfrey both suffering injuries against Chelsea.
Michael Keane looks like he will have to stay at Goodison Park for now to provide cover at the back.

West Ham have been looking at alternative options to replace Issa Diop after his move to Fulham and solve their own defensive crisis.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Thilo Kehrer is one option they’ve been considering, while Manchester United’s Eric Bailly could also be on his way to the London Stadium.
West Ham may be able to go in for Keane again as the window progresses and Everton have a better understanding of how bad Godfrey and Mina’s injuries are.
For now, Moyes is best off trying to pick up a defender from a side who aren’t also struggling with injuries in exactly the same position.
