Report: Tottenham interested in Depay as replacement for Bergwijn
Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Memphis Depay as a potential replacement for Steven Bergwijn, with the forward closing in on a move away, according to a report from Foot Mercato.
Bergwijn looks set to leave Spurs this summer. The £27 million Dutchman has already spoken of his desire to move on. And reports have suggested that Tottenham have opened talks with Ajax over the 24-year-old.
It is no surprise to see Bergwijn close in on the exit. Unfortunately, he was never able to establish himself as a starter at Tottenham. And he probably would have gone in January had he not scored the two goals in that amazing win away at Leicester.
With his departure, Tottenham will certainly need to find a replacement. And Foot Mercato suggests that the man Spurs want to replace Bergwijn is his countryman.
Depay is in an interesting situation at Barcelona. He only arrived last summer. But he is already approaching the final year of his contract.
The forward wants to stay at the Nou Camp. But if Barca decide to let him go in this window, they are willing to accept just £17 million for the striker.
Tottenham were linked with Depay earlier in the year. But since then, reports have claimed Arsenal and Newcastle want him. And thus, it had appeared that their interest may have cooled.
However, Tottenham are keen on Depay if Bergwijn leaves.
Tottenham interested in Depay
Signing Depay would be quite a statement from Tottenham. He did not have the best spell in the Premier League previously. And he did not always have the easiest year with Barcelona.
However, he ended the campaign with 13 goals in all competitions. He should be at the peak of his powers. And he has been described as a ‘world-class‘ player.
Bergwijn looks to have a fantastic future ahead. But, based on his time he has had at Tottenham, you would have to think that Depay could prove to be a real upgrade.
