Report: Newcastle want Memphis Depay; Everton also interested

Newcastle want Memphis Depay, with Sport in Spain reporting that Everton and the Magpies have been monitoring the forward’s situation at Barcelona.

Depay could well be on the way back to the Premier League this summer. He is heading into the final year of his contract with Barcelona, though Sport reports that the Catalan giants have the option to extend his terms by a further year.

Reports have claimed that Arsenal have made an enquiry for Depay. But the Gunners are not the only English side looking at a move for the Dutchman.

Sport reports that both Newcastle and Everton are monitoring Depay. Of course, the Toffees’ hopes will surely rest on whether they manage to keep themselves in the Premier League.

That is not an issue for the Magpies. Eddie Howe’s men have ensured that they will be at English football’s top table once again next season. And there will be a lot of intrigue surrounding the business they do in the summer.

Newcastle want Memphis Depay

Newcastle will almost certainly strengthen up front. Callum Wilson proved how dangerous he can be on Monday as he gave Arsenal a torrid evening. But keeping him fit has proved to be a challenge for Newcastle.

Chris Wood has not been prolific since moving to Tyneside. And clearly, the signing of a marquee forward would excite the Newcastle fanbase greatly.

Depay has had a mixed time at the Nou Camp. He is their joint top goalscorer, with 13 in all competitions. He has scored 12 times in La Liga. But he has not always found holding down a place in Xavi’s plans the easiest task.

However, he was absolutely sensational while with Lyon. And he has been described as a ‘world-class‘ forward in the past.

So it would be a massive statement if Newcastle could see off competition from the likes of Arsenal and Everton for Depay.
