Report: Tottenham now in negotiations over selling 'brilliant' player to league champions

Tottenham Hotspur have begun talks with Ajax over selling Steven Bergwijn, according to De Telegraaf (via Sport Witness).

The Spurs winger has been linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for some time now.

Indeed, Bergwijn himself recently admitted that he’s leaving, telling De Telegraaf his “suitcase is already packed”.

Ajax showed interest in the former PSV star in January, but failed to find an agreement with Tottenham.

Now, De Telegraaf has reported that ‘negotiations are now underway’ once again between Ajax and Spurs.

While Bergwijn has struggled for game time at Tottenham, he has been shining in the famous Netherlands orange top.

Under Louis van Gaal, the 24-year-old has been playing and scoring regularly – five goals in his last five, in fact.

And Van Gaal has urged Bergwijn to make the move to the Eredivisie champions.

As per 90Min, he told a press conference: “If it’s up to me, Steven Bergwijn may join Ajax as soon as possible.”

Bergwijn is a great player, but it just doesn’t seem to be working out for him at Tottenham.

And with Dejan Kulusevski shining at Spurs, the “brilliant” Dutchman has slipped further down the pecking order.

It’s just one of those things – Kulusevski, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min is a superb front line.

And at the end of the day, Antonio Conte must do what works best for the team, not individual players.

Bergwijn deserves regular game time, and a move away for him is certainly best for his career.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will be able to recoup at least some of the £27million they spent on him.
