Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to win the race to sign Sven Botman ahead of Newcastle United, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (27/2; page 70).

Perhaps no week sums up the rollercoaster of life under Antonio Conte better than this one for Spurs fans. It appeared that the writing was on the wall for the Italian after Tottenham were beaten at Burnley.

However, after flirting with the idea of leaving, Conte then led his side to an absolutely dominant 4-0 win at Leeds. Tottenham barely needed to get out of second gear at Elland Road.

It was another result and performance that highlighted the kind of potential Tottenham could have under Conte. And with that, there may now be a little more optimism about how the summer could play out should he remain in charge.

It does appear that the Spurs hierarchy want to back him in the market. In fact, the Sunday Mirror (27/2; page 70) reports that Tottenham are desperate to beat Newcastle to Botman.

It is noted that Botman perfectly fits the bill for Tottenham. They are set to prioritise signing a left-sided centre-back.

Botman will apparently cost £30 million. But Newcastle are currently on pole position. And Amanda Staveley claimed this week that the Dutchman is very keen to move to Tyneside.

Tottenham beating Newcastle to Sven Botman deal would be a real statement

Newcastle are going to be the team to watch out for this summer. It is looking increasingly likely that they will be staying in the Premier League.

With that, they may have the means to blow sides out of the water for transfer targets. So Tottenham certainly face an uphill battle trying to sign Botman.

It would be a smart piece of business to land the Lille star. He has previously been labelled a ‘machine‘, and he has only recently turned 22.

It would be a real statement therefore, if Tottenham could deliver Botman to Conte ahead of next season.
