Report: £35m ‘machine’ wants to join Newcastle this summer

Newcastle United enjoyed a good enough January transfer window but with eyes already on the summer, Amanda Staveley has claimed that another big-money target, Sven Botman, still wants to join the club.

The Toon were linked with Botman throughout the window but in the end, couldn’t get a deal over the line for the impressive Dutchman. Lille, to their credit, stuck to their guns and essentially priced Newcastle out of a move.

However, it has been suggested Botman was always open to moving to Newcastle. This, despite Lille being in the Champions League and other clubs showing interest. And according to Newcastle chief Staveley, Botman remains very much interested in a switch.

“We had to encourage players – ‘we’ll be a safe place for you, we’ll deliver and grow’. Some desperately wanted to come to us, like Sven (Botman), who still does very much and has talked very openly about that,” Staveley has told The Athletic.

As we all know, Newcastle landed five players in January. The big signings were Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes, while seasoned PL players Dan Burn, Matt Targett, and Chris Wood also arrived.

TBR’s View: Botman To Newcastle Looking As Likely As Ever

Players will be keeping tabs on how Newcastle do this season and the club could be set for a huge summer. If they avoid relegation – which looks a realistic possibility – then the spending could really kickstart.

Botman, who was initially rated around the £35m mark, according to reports, would be a superb addition. He’s seen as one of the best up and coming defenders in Europe and has been labelled as a ‘machine’ by Jose Fonte.

If Newcastle want that big-name defensive signing, then Sven Botman might be their man.
