According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are confident of beating Tottenham Hotspur to sign Lille defender Sven Botman in the summer.
The Dutch defender was Eddie Howe’s number one target in the January transfer window. Newcastle tried extremely hard to get a deal for Botman done, but Lille refused to budge.
The Magpies then turned their attention to Diego Carlos of Sevilla, but a deal for the Brazilian defender couldn’t be completed either.
Dan Burn was the only centre-half they could bring in last month and he is proving to be a great signing. However, Newcastle are ready to go back in for Botman in the summer and they are not scared of Tottenham’s competition.
Newcastle can ‘blow Tottenham out of the water’ to sign Sven Botman
The report claims that Amanda Staveley and the Newcastle board are still keen on Botman and are ready to battle Italian giants AC Milan and Antonio Conte’s Tottenham to sign him.
It has even been claimed that the new Newcastle owners are willing to ‘blow Tottenham out of the water’ with their salary offer for Botman, who has been labelled as a ‘great player’ by Italy legend Paulo Maldini.
Newcastle’s only hurdle at the moment is to convince the Dutchman that they can be contenders for the Premier League soon. That is something the Lille man is looking for and it will be interesting to see if Howe can assure him that the Magpies are a better club for him than Tottenham.

TBR View:
Newcastle definitely have the financial power to blow Tottenham, Milan and most other clubs out of the water thanks to their new owners. They can afford to sign most players in the world now, but just money isn’t enough to get deals over the line.
The Magpies’ immediate priority is to stay up in the Premier League and they are heading in the right direction. Three wins on the bounce has pushed them out of the drop zone and a few more good results will be enough to avoid relegation.
If Newcastle achieve that, their chances of signing players like Botman will increase considerably and after securing Bruno Guimaraes’ signature last month, would it really be a surprise to see them lure the Lille man in? We don’t think so!
