Tottenham are set to sign Sam Johnstone, with the Sunday Mirror (8/5; page 74) reporting that Manchester United have decided against following up on their interest in the goalkeeper.
Johnstone’s contract with West Brom expires at the end of the season. The 29-year-old was not involved in any of the Baggies’ last five Championship games once their play-off hopes had been dashed. Steve Bruce decided to use his other options with Johnstone’s departure looking inevitable.

Tottenham have had the England international on their radar for some time. And reports had claimed that they were front-runners for the goalkeeper’s signature.
It now appears that a deal has moved a step closer. According to the Sunday Mirror (8/5; page 74), Tottenham are now set to win the race for Johnstone. The report has claimed that Manchester United have decided against pursuing a deal for the West Brom man.

The Sunday Mirror adds Spurs see Johnstone providing genuine competition for Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham set to sign Sam Johnstone
It will be a boost if Tottenham could bring Johnstone in this summer. Pierluigi Gollini is on loan from Atalanta. And reports have suggested that he may not stay beyond this season. The Italian is yet to make his Premier League debut for Spurs.
Johnstone is a very good goalkeeper, who shone in the Premier League when the Baggies were last in the top-flight. Glenn Hoddle labelled him an ‘outstanding’ player.
And obviously, his contract situation opens the door for a brilliant piece of business. Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici can focus much more of their budget on other areas of the squad.
And if Johnstone lives up to expectations while in North London, Tottenham may perhaps have their ideal replacement for Lloris lined up for when their captain steps aside.
