Report: Tottenham now favourites to sign ‘outstanding’ Europa League winner this summer

According to Football.London, Tottenham are now in pole position to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this summer.

Johnstone has been on the radar of Spurs for some time already and reports in recent days have suggested that the club will look to sign the Baggies star this summer. Most recent reports claim that Rangers are keen on landing Johnstone too, with Spurs and others in the mix.

However, FL’s latest report today now suggests it is indeed Antonio Conte’s side who are favourites to sign the England international. Johnstone is out of contract with West Brom and is seen as one of the better free-agents out there when it comes to the upcoming market.

Johnstone made his name with Manchester United but never got close to replacing David De Gea, despite being part of title-winning and Europa League winning squads at Old Trafford. Since moving to Aston Villa on loan and then the Baggies, Johnstone has cemented himself as one of the best English goalkeepers.

It’s claimed that Tottenham want Johnstone to come in and provide back up and competition for Hugo Lloris. Pierluigi Gollini is expected to be sent back to Italy, with Spurs unimpressed with the Italian goalkeeper.

Labelled outstanding by Micah Richards previously, Johnstone has three caps for England now.

As long as Johnstone is happy to play second fiddle and bide his time a bit, then this is a smart signing all around.

Of course, he’s used to being the main man in recent seasons but there has to be a temptation about joining a club like Tottenham as well. The lure of Conte will also be a factor, as will the chance to link up with England teammate Harry Kane.

On a freebie, Johnstone is a sound signing for Tottenham and Conte. He improves the squad, and is reliable and proven. In the end, there’s not much more you can ask for in a number two stopper.
