Atletico Madrid are prepared to pay £20 million to sign Emerson Royal from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to a report from The Sun.

It is certainly starting to appear that Royal’s time in North London may come to an end after less than one year. He has fallen out of favour under Antonio Conte.

Reports this week claimed that Tottenham are open to offers for Royal this summer. He has had to watch as Matt Doherty has cemented himself as first-choice in recent weeks.

He has struggled. But there is interest. It was reported on Wednesday that both Inter Milan and Atletico have made contact regarding a possible move for the Brazil international.

And we now know a little more regarding Atleti’s interest.

The Sun reports that Diego Simeone’s men are keen to sign Royal. However, they are only prepared to pay £20 million for the 23-year-old.

Tottenham face tough decision should Atletico Madrid make £20m bid for Emerson Royal

Obviously, it is not ideal that Tottenham are facing making a loss on Royal. It appeared to be a potential coup when they paid £25.8 million to sign him from Barcelona.

And he has shown glimpses of his quality. He was described as ‘amazing‘ after one display this season.

However, £20 million does not seem to be a terrible price. Certainly, his value is only going to drop from here should he remain on the periphery of Conte’s squad.

Some Spurs fans may be tempted to suggest that they immediately cash in should Atletico make that kind of bid. A loss of around £6 million is not the end of the world for a club of their stature.

On the other hand, Tottenham may look at both Inter and Atletico – both current champions of their domestic leagues – wanting Royal and wonder whether they should dig their heels in for a bigger fee.
