Report: Tottenham open to offers for Emerson Royal this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be open to offers for Emerson Royal before the end of his first season with the club, according to a report from The Sun.

Signing Royal appeared to be a coup last summer for Spurs. He arrived off the back of an impressive spell with Real Betis and a move to Barcelona. And he signed a five-year deal.

The Sun notes that Tottenham paid £26 million to sign the 23-year-old. Unfortunately, he has rarely come close to justifying that sort of fee.

In fact, he has now lost his place to Matt Doherty. And with Doherty making the most of his opportunity, Spurs have seemingly decided to leave the door open for Royal to leave.

The Sun reports that Tottenham are already believed to be open to fielding bids for Royal. It is not clear what sort of fee they may be hoping for.

Clearly, Spurs are not in the strongest position if they hope to recoup the money that they spent on the full-back.

Tottenham may benefit in the long-term from loaning Emerson Royal out

It is hard to imagine that any side would be willing to offer Tottenham anything like £26 million for Royal. He has not settled in the Premier League. And he does not look like he suits Antonio Conte’s style of play.

With that in mind, a loan deal may be the best option in the long-term.

Tottenham may simply want to offload Royal before his value drops further. But clearly, he is a player with some potential.

Barcelona were willing to let him go. But they also played him before his departure. So they obviously saw something in him.

Nuno Espírito Santo meanwhile, labelled him a ‘very talented‘ player.

A loan move may present Tottenham with the best way to ultimately build Royal’s value back up ahead of a sale further down the line.
