Report: Newcastle United waiting to pounce and move to sign 'sensational' player as soon as his asking price drops

Newcastle United remain interested in signing Leicester City playmaker James Maddison, according to The Times.

The report suggests that Newcastle will make another bid for the 25-year-old if Leicester reduce their asking price.

The Magpies made two bids to sign Maddison in the summer, however their second offer of £45m was rejected by Leicester.

Newcastle could potentially face some competition in securing Maddison’s signature.

Tottenham have long been admirers of his, but have never made a bid of the 25-year-old.

If they are made aware of Maddison’s asking price being reduced, they could challenge Newcastle’s interest.

It’s been a very poor start to the season for Leicester City, who remain bottom of the Premier League.

David James has previously said that Maddison’s style of play may be a ‘detriment’ to the rest of the team.

It’s unlikely that Brendan Rodgers shares that view, but if he did, cashing in on Maddison may be the best solution.

Newcastle interested in Maddison

A move for Maddison would make sense for Newcastle.

The Englishman is a natural playmaker but also capable of scoring goals from midfield.

Howe has made his side more secure in defence, but they still struggle to score as often as he would like.

Callum Wilson has struggled with injuries since arriving at St James’ Park.

Record signing Alexander Isak has a better injury record, but left international duty early after picking up a knock.

Having a regular supply of goals from a midfielder would ease the burden on Howe’s forwards.

Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron have never been prolific for the Magpies.

Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton have formed a fantastic midfield partnership, but won’t score many goals in their deeper roles.

Newcastle’s interest in the ‘sensational’ Maddison makes a lot of sense, but their transfer plans have been made clear.

Their new-found wealth is well known, and so getting the best deal for players is proving difficult.

Patience is likely to be key, and rushing into a move for Maddison when Leicester’s Premier League future is at risk may not be the best course of action.
