According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle United have opened talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchel Bakker in the coming days.

The Magpies have already signed a full-back in Kieran Trippier in this month’s transfer window. The Englishman’s experience at the top level is one of the biggest reasons why Eddie Howe wanted him, but it looks like the Toon boss prefers youth on the other side.

The report claims that Newcastle, who are on the lookout for a new left-back, are very keen to sign Bakker, who has played 15 times for Leverkusen in all competitions since the start of the season.

The Dutchman, still only 21, is a very interesting option for the Magpies ahead of what likes like a very difficult relegation battle.

Bakker only joined Leverkusen at the start of this season.

He was a regular at Paris Saint-Germain when now-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was at the helm. However, Mauricio Pochettino didn’t fancy him at all and quickly pushed him out of the door.

Bakker’s representative Mino Raiola used his contacts to get him a move to Leverkusen, but the super-agent could now bring his client to Tyneside as Howe is in desperate need of a new left-back.

A deal, however, will not be easy as the Dutch under-21 international still has three-and-a-half years left on his current contract at the BayArena.

TBR View:

Newcastle are in a tricky position with respect to recruitment.

On one hand, they need experienced players who know how to win to avoid the drop, while on the other hand, they need to look at young players to build for the future.

In Bakker, they could get both.

The 21-year-old has played over 60 senior games for top clubs like Ajax, PSG and Leverkusen so far in his career. He has also won seven trophies already, and he could well bring in a winning mentality to St James’ Park.

Bakker would be a great signing for the Magpies, but a deal will not be easy to complete, unless Raiola works his magic.
