Report: Newcastle now want to sign PL star who Guardiola said is 'one of the most incredible players'
Newcastle want to sign Kasper Schmeichel from Leicester City when the summer transfer window opens as Brendan Rodgers plots a Foxes reshuffle.
That might be a surprise considering Schmeichel’s longevity and importance to Leicester but Rodgers is looking to respond to a disappointing season.
In truth, the drop off at the King Power Stadium has been due to injuries and European commitments, and not much to do with Schmeichel himself.
Newcastle want to sign Kasper Schmeichel
Their report reads: “Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers is braced for a summer of change at the King Power Stadium – with goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel a potential big-name departure.
“TalkSPORT has been told Rodgers is planning a reshuffle of his squad after the injury-hit Foxes fell short of their aim to qualify for Europe this season.
“Stalwart Schmeichel – one of the few survivors from Leicester’s miracle Premier League title win – is out of contract next summer and is keen to play regular European football.
“Talks between the 35-year-old club captain and management are due to take place once the season finishes.
Newcastle are keen to sign a new number one and are tracking Schmeichel’s situation but the Dane would also be open to a move abroad.”
No lesser authority than Pep Guardiola said after a 1-0 2019 victory over Leicester that: “Schmeichel is one of the most incredible players.”
In terms of goalkeepers, Newcastle have also been linked with Manchester United glovesman Dean Henderson, who has had a season of stagnation and needs a new club.
Arsenal’s Bernd Leno has also been linked with Tyneside, and he has dropped to second choice at the Emirates Stadium this term.
Perhaps Leno, Henderson and Schmeichel are the three goalkeepers on Newcastle’s list of targets, and time will tell who will be the Toon number one by the first game of next season.
