Report: Arsenal are ready to sell 'great' player and Newcastle now really want to sign him
It is clear that Newcastle want a new goalkeeper ahead of the start of the 2022/23 season and Bernd Leno of Arsenal is a key target.
That is according to 90Min, who say that the Gunners are willing to sell the German now that they have agreed a deal to sign Matt Turner.
Manchester United stopper Dean Henderson is also a real contender for the number one spot on Tyneside next season after a season of stagnation.
Last term, he was in contention for the United number one spot, but got Covid in pre-season, allowing David de Gea to start the season between the sticks and his form means he has never even been close to losing his place.
Similarly, Leno was Mikel Arteta’s number one before Aaron Ramsdale, Henderson’s international teammate of course, came in and took the gloves.
That means that Leno needs a move to reignite his career, just like Henderson does.
The report says that United want a loan exit for Henderson with mandatory fee this summer, while Leno is up for sale when the market re-opens.
Henderson or Leno: Who would be better for Newcastle?
On the face of it, Henderson looks the better fit and he really must be desperate now to establish himself as a Premier League goalkeeper.
The World Cup is not far away and he has slipped out of the England picture because he is simply not playing often enough at club level.
But there will always be other clubs in the chase for top goalkeepers, so it makes sense to keep tabs on Leno, and Newcastle can offer him a better financial package than he would get in Germany.
Leno has already impressed Newcastle icon Alan Shearer, who called him ‘great‘, back in March 2019, when he was unequivocally Arsenal’s first choice.
