According to Portuguese newspaper Record, Liverpool have just tabled a mammoth bid to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica this summer.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield over the last few months. Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk have both raved about him as well, and his numbers from last season tell you why.

Nunez scored 34 goals and provided four assists in 41 games last season. That is a truly sensational record for any striker, let alone someone who is still only 22 years old.

A number of clubs are said to be interested in Nunez this summer, but it looks like Liverpool are the ones who have made the first move.

Liverpool have just made a huge bid for Darwin Nunez

Liverpool are set to lose Sadio Mane this summer, and they are on the lookout for a replacement. They have been linked with quite a few names already but none more than Nunez.

The report claims that the Reds have just tabled a mammoth £85 million (€100m) bid to sign Nunez. It has been claimed that Klopp is ‘crazy’ about the Uruguayan, who scored twice against Liverpool in the Champions League last season.

If the reported mammoth bid is accepted, Nunez will be the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history – beating the £75 million they paid to Southampton to sign Virgil van Dijk in January 2018 (Sky Sports).

The report further claims that ‘phenomenal‘ Nunez has already told Benfica that he intends to play at Anfield for Liverpool next season.

£85 million for one player is a lot of money, but Nunez may well be worth the big bucks.

The 22-year-old’s goalscoring record is truly magnificent. He has been incredible for Benfica over the last 12 months, and before anyone jumps in to call it a farmer’s league, Nunez scored against Barcelona, Bayern Munich and even Liverpool last season, thus proving that he has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

After Manchester City secured the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool simply have to strengthen their squad to be able to compete with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Signing Nunez would definitely be one way of doing that, and it will be interesting to see how Benfica will respond to the offer in the coming days.
