Report: Howe is pushing Newcastle to sign 'fantastic' England international this summer, he's keen to join them
Newcastle have long been credited with an interest in Manchester United’s England international midfielder Jesse Lingard.
The Magpies almost got Lingard at the end of the January transfer window, but the situation at Old Trafford seemed to change late on.
That has seen Lingard stay put, where he looks set to run down the final weeks of his deal before moving on as a free agent in the summer.
90Min report that Newcastle are still hot on the situation and that manager Eddie Howe is pushing hard to sign Lingard when the market re-opens.
They report that Newcastle’s offer is significantly bigger than the one on the table from West Ham, where Lingard of course spent the latter half of 2020/21 on loan.
A potential move to east London has failed to materialise since that loan spell, with David Moyes still needing to add depth to his squad.
The report also claims that Atletico Madrid and AC Milan are monitoring the situation, and Lingard would be free to talk to overseas clubs now as he is into the final six months of his deal.
Crucially, a move to Newcastle apparently appeals to Lingard, and that means that Howe’s push to sign him could prove successful.
Newcastle would need Lingard to unlock West Ham form
In recent years, Lingard has almost looked a different player in his times away from Manchester United.
As soon as he joined West Ham on loan, he set the Premier League alight and earned back his England spot, forcing his way into the preliminary Euro 2020 squad.
That Hammers spell was described as ‘fantastic‘ by Tony Cottee but then Lingard failed to move away from United, where his final campaign at the club has just ebbed away.
Newcastle would want to see the West Ham version of Lingard, not the player who has really struggled in a red shirt for a number of campaigns now.
