Report: Newcastle fear Lingard wage demands could prove prohibitive

Newcastle United continue to monitor Jesse Lingard ahead of the summer, but The Athletic reports that his wage demands could prove to be problematic for the Magpies.

Lingard is set to be a free agent at the end of the season. And the game-time he has enjoyed with Manchester United this term will have done little to convince the attacking midfielder that he should stay.

Of course, there is still some uncertainty over who will be in charge at Old Trafford next season. And that perhaps means that a late twist in the tale is not out of the question.

One thing that is for certain is that Lingard will attract significant offers from elsewhere. And one of those in the running is Newcastle.

The Athletic reports that Eddie Howe’s men continue to monitor the 29-year-old.

Newcastle reportedly wanted to sign Lingard during the January transfer window. So it is little surprise that they are still in the running as he edges closer to becoming a free agent.

However, it would appear that agreeing terms with the England international will not be easy. The Athletic reports that his wage demands may prove too prohibitive.

Lingard worth the money for Newcastle if he recaptures magic from West Ham spell

You can understand why Newcastle may be wary of breaking the bank for Lingard. He turns 30 before the end of the year. And he has spent a large part of this season on the sidelines.

Howe will be looking to build a side Newcastle can kick on with for years to come. And obviously, Lingard is not necessarily a player who fits that idea.

However, Lingard was outrageously good during a ‘stunning‘ loan spell with West Ham last season. And if he recaptures that sort of form at his next club, he would be an absolutely amazing signing.
